Seafood News

Vannamei prices continue to increase compared to last week, but the current price is still at a lower level compared to the same period of last year. Black Tiger price also has increased as well, but the gap with last year was smaller than Vannamei one. Main size of Vannamei is 35-55 count, while Black Tiger is 20 count. Due to the difficulties of Covid19, many intensive and super-intensive shrimp farmers choose the option of “hanging the pond”, means restocking only 30% of their farms. This factor will cause a shortage of raw materials in the last quarter of 2021.

The unpredictable skyrocket ocean freight and container shortage, as well as the increasing price of the supply chain creates more challenges for the exporters. Shrimp manufacturers are focusing on their pending orders after Covid19 relaxation in Vietnam.

Vietnam’s seafood exports continued falling 23 percent in September, following a significant decline of 36 percent in August. In first 9 months of 2021, the export of seafood from Vietnam hit 6.2 billion USD, up 3 percent year-on-year.

Germany is the largest shrimp import market of Vietnam in the EU, accounting for 26% of the total value of Vietnam’s shrimp exports to the EU. Vietnam’s shrimp exports to Germany in August and the first half of September began to decline due to social distancing to prevent disease causing production disruption. However, shrimp exports to Germany as of the first half of September this year still increased by 24.5% to 97.2 million USD.

Among EU member countries, Italy, France and Spain are the three biggest importers of Vietnamese squid and octopus. Under the EVFTA Agreement, import tax rates on frozen and processed cephalopod products exported to the EU are 0%, and after the Covid-19 pandemic in the world is better controlled, Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to EU has recovered well.
